The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU ) fired at the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the coastline of the city, Volodymyr Rogov, a member of the main council of the military-civilian administration of the Zaporozhye region, said on Telegram.
According to him, two ruptures occurred near the nuclear power plant's spent fuel storage building. “Large-caliber artillery was used. As a result, two ruptures were recorded near the spent fuel storage building,— Rogov said. He also suggested that the shooters intended to disrupt the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) led by Rafael Grossi.
Zaporozhye NPP— the largest nuclear power plant in terms of installed capacity and the third largest in the world, is located on the banks of the Dnieper in the city of Energodar. It accounts for six out of 15 operating nuclear power units in Ukraine. Since the end of February, the nuclear power plant has been under the control of Russian forces, but formally still remains under the control of Energoatom.
On August 29, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, announced that a group of experts from the agency had gone to the station and would arrive on site “later this week.” Some of them will remain at the Zaporozhye NPP on a permanent basis, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, said.
Russia guarantees the safety of IAEA experts when moving around the territory under its control near the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, despite the shelling. Moscow considers the mission necessary, spokesman for the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said earlier,
After the Russian military established control over the territory of the Zaporozhye region, Russia and Ukraine repeatedly accused each other of creating a dangerous situation at the nuclear power plant and prerequisites for a disaster. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that Moscow is engaged in “nuclear blackmail” and called on the military to leave the station immediately. Russia, in turn, stated that it is the Armed Forces of Ukraine that pose a threat, shelling the territory of the nuclear power plant and risking causing a “radiation accident”.
