Ukrainian military strikes on the civilian infrastructure of Energodar are aimed at disrupting the visit of the IAEA mission to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, TASS reports with reference to the Energodar military-civilian administration.
“This provocation by militants controlled by Kyiv, aimed at disrupting the visit of the head of the IAEA [Rafaelz Mariano Grossi] to the Zaporozhye NPP,— the message says.
On the shelling of the residential area of the city from American howitzers M777, the CAA Energodara reported on the evening of August 28. Seven people were hospitalized as a result of the strikes, two of whom are in serious condition.
Part of the Zaporozhye region, including the city of Energodar and the nuclear power plant located on its territory have been controlled by the Russian military since the end of February. Since mid-July, the parties have been mutually accusing each other of shelling the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
Moscow expressed its readiness to assist in organizing the arrival of the IAEA mission to the station. Ukraine also supported the visit of the IAEA staff and proposed to consider the possibility of a permanent presence of the mission at the nuclear power plant. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said he would welcome the permanent presence of IAEA experts there.
On August 26, The Wall Street Journal, citing participants in the talks about the visit of the IAEA inspection, reported that this could happen next week. According to the newspaper, agency staff can also bring spare parts, radiation monitoring equipment and other necessary equipment to the station.
As The New York Times later clarified, the mission should include the head of the agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, as well as 13 experts from Poland, Lithuania, China, Serbia, France, Italy.
