Deputy Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins called for a cessation of hostilities and the creation of a demilitarized zone around the Zaporozhye NPP.

“We continue to call for the cessation of all military operations near the nuclear power plant and the return of full control over it to Ukraine and, of course, the creation of a demilitarized zone around this nuclear power plant”,— Jenkins said in a telephone briefing, calling the fighting near the nuclear plant “dangerous and irresponsible.”

According to her, Russian actions to disconnect the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant from the network create a serious risk of a nuclear incident and the release of radiation. “This is not only a threat to the environment and people in Ukraine, it will also affect neighboring countries, as well as the entire international community as a whole. The risk of radiation spread can be averted if Russia returns control of the nuclear power plant to Ukraine and withdraws entirely from Ukrainian territory. Russia must immediately stop its military operations around the nuclear power plant and allow Ukrainian specialists to do their work without the threat of the Russian military, — added the undersecretary. Jenkins stressed that Russia should allow IAEA inspectors access to the Zaporozhye NPP so that they can assess all aspects of the safety of the nuclear power plant.

Earlier on Thursday, August 25, Energoatom said that for the first time in history Zaporizhzhya NPP was completely disconnected from the power grid. According to the Ukrainian company, due to fires at the ash dumps of the Zaporozhye thermal power plant, which is located next to the nuclear power plant, the last, fourth communication line of the nuclear power plant with the energy system of Ukraine was switched off twice. Three others were previously damaged during shelling.

Later, the head of the pro-Russian administration of the Zaporozhye region, Yevgeny Balitsky, said that the power units were turned off as a result of an emergency protection system. According to him, due to a blow from the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on power lines in the area of the nuclear power plant, a fire occurred in the territory of the security zone of the 750 kV overhead line, the fire provoked a short circuit on the power line. After the fire was extinguished, one unit was put into operation, he writes.

Since the beginning of the conflict, Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of strikes on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and damage to its infrastructure.

Russia has repeatedly denied using the nuclear power plant as a military facility. On Thursday, the State Duma Council called on the UN and the IAEA to influence Kyiv and demand an end to the shelling.
